Vol. 128 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Danish Butter Supplies.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether the discussions with the Danish exporting authority regarding 338 cwts. butter rejected as unsatisfactory have been concluded; and, if so, with what result and if he will state the total quantity of butter supplied by the Danish export authority.

As a result of discussions between the Butter Marketing Committee and the Danish Butter Export Board, the latter has agreed to the cancellation of a contract for a further 1,000 tons of sweet cream butter placed on 15th May, 1951, a considerable portion of which had already been manufactured for the Irish market, and has paid a sum of £177 8s. 10d. to the committee. This sum does not, of course, represent the total loss incurred on rejected butter, but in view of the agreement arrived at for the cancellation of the contract for the further 1,000 tons, which has resulted in a serious loss to the Danish Export Board, it is considered that, on the whole, the attitude of the Danish export authority has not been unreasonable.

The total quantity of butter imported from Denmark was 50,017 cwts.

Would there be a possibility that the Minister would apologise for the false allegations that were made whilst he was in opposition, as regards the quality of Danish butter?

The allegations were made by the consuming public.

Would the Minister's predecessor apologise to the Irish farmers?

No one will ever apologise for your actions.

Brian Boru.
