Vol. 128 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Anthracite.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that anthracite (Esse Beans) is at present being sold at £14 per ton in County Donegal, whereas the same commodity is delivered in Derry at £7 19s. 0d. per ton, and that even allowing an extra 30/ - per ton for British coal to the Republic of Ireland, the differential in prices appears excessive; and, if so, if he will have the price charged investigated.

The price of anthracite is not officially controlled but I am aware that the price throughout the country is at a high level. The reasons for this are that since the beginning of the year substantial increases have occurred in the prices of both native and British anthracite and that to maintain supplies we have had to import a substantial quantity of American anthracite at a very high cost, viz., £11 3s. a ton at ship's side.

In the absence of information regarding the cost and source of supply of the anthracite referred to by the Deputy, I am unable to say whether the price of £14 per ton stated to be charged in County Donegal is excessive, but I am arranging to have the position investigated.

Is the domestic producer of anthracite charging £14 per ton?

Where is the differential going?

I have said I have no information concerning that price, but I will have the matter investigated and find if that is so.
