asked the Minister for Health if he will state how many persons constituted the board set up by Cork County Manager for the appointment of steam attendant to Fermoy County Hospital, and the various grades they represented in the Cork County Council staff and their qualifications.

asked the Minister for Health if he will state whether Irish was an essential subject for the appointment of steam attendant at Fermoy County Hospital.

asked the Minister for Health if any marks were given for service during the emergency by the Cork County Manager in the competition for appointment as steam attendant at Fermoy County Hospital.

With your permission, a Chinn Chomhairle, I propose to reply to Questions Nos. 15 to 18 together.

As I informed the Deputy in reply to a question on 8th November, the recent appointment of a steam attendant at Fermoy County Hospital was a matter for the local authority in pursuance of the Local Government (Minor Offices) Order, 1943. Subject to my being satisfied that the terms of that Order were complied with, I have no functions in the matter. I am satisfied that the terms of the Order were complied with.

I have, however, in order to satisfy the Deputy, obtained a report from the county manager in regard to the matters covered in the questions. The report indicates that candidates were interviewed at the Court House, Cork, by a selection board consisting of a chief assistant county engineer, an engineer to a public assistance authority, and a staff officer. Irish was not an essential qualification. The board awarded marks for emergency service in the Defence Forces and Auxiliary Defence Services to any candidates who showed that they were entitled to them.
