Vol. 129 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Presidential Election.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will give-the Dáil an assurance that the Presidential election, due to be held this year, will not be held on the same day as any election for either the Dáil or local authorities.

The only election which by law is due to take place this year is the Presidential election.

Is the Minister aware that there is a strong desire amongst the people of the country at the present time that there should be elected a President who would have had no active connection with any political Party? If such is the case, and if we are to get such a President elected, it is not right that we should have the Presidential election mixed up with the political tension that arises in the case of local or general elections.

In reply to the Deputy. I can only repeat the answer which I have already given. Any other matters on which the Deputy requires information will have to be considered separately.
