Vol. 129 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Government Information Bureau Statement.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state, in regard to the statement issued by the Government Information Bureau which was published on the 5th February, 1952, the nature of the statements which were wrongly attributed to him and the names of the British and Belfast papers which published the report in question.

The statement issued by the Government Information Bureau to which the Deputy refers clearly indicated the nature of the erroneous newspaper reports. For the Deputy's benefit I may add that these reports were to the general effect that Irish money was no longer safe in Britain and should be brought home as quickly as possible.

The names of the British and Belfast papers which published these reports are as follows: Certain editions of the News Chronicle and of the Daily Herald, the Belfast Newsletter, the Northern Whig, the Irish News; certain editions of the Irish Weekly and Ulster Examiner and the Derry Journal.

I should add that despite the official denial that a responsible Minister had made these statements no correction appears to have been published by the Daily Herald, the Belfast Newsletter or the Derry Journal.
