Vol. 129 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Shankill Housing.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the urgent need for additional houses in the Shankill area; and, if so, if he is now prepared to make portion of the lands at Chantilly Stud Farm available to the Dublin County Council for housing purposes.

I understand from the housing authority that a need for further new houses exists in the Shankill area. In regard to the land at Chantilly Stud Farm, however, I am not yet in a position to add to my reply of the 14th February, 1952, to a previous question by the Deputy in the matter.

Can the Minister say when he expects to be in a position to give a decision?

I should like the Deputy to know that this is a fairly complicated matter and that it is one into which it is not possible to go fully by way of question and answer. From what I have seen of it, I understand that the surrender of the amount of land required by the local authority concerned, even if there were no technical difficulties, raises problems that have to be considered.

Assuming that that is so, would the Minister consider suggesting to the local authority to look elsewhere for sites rather than await a decision on the technical and other questions involved?

We have been in touch with the Department concerned. We shall try to get a decision as soon as possible and have it conveyed to the authority primarily concerned with the building of houses.

Will the Minister consult the Minister for Education on the question of the acquisition of a site on the same farm for the erection of a school?

That is one of the difficulties. There are others, too.
