Vol. 129 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Electricity for Pettigo (Donegal).

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will request the Electricity Supply Board to have electricity supplied to Pettigo, County Donegal, and thus give the area an opportunity of participating in the benefits to be derived under the Undeveloped Areas Act, 1952.

I am informed by the Electricity Supply Board that the town of Pettigo, County Donegal, is over 12 miles from the nearest point of the board's present network. I am also informed that there is no immediate prospect of the extension of the board's network to the town under the rural electrification scheme.

Is the Minister satisfied that an area which has not rural electrification cannot take advantage of the Undeveloped Areas Act?

No. The Undeveloped Areas Bill relates only to development of industry.

Without electricity is it possible to develop industry?

Mr. O'Higgins

That is a six marker.

I will put it the other way around. Before the development of industry the question of electrification will be considered.

Surely that is putting the cart before the horse.

That would not bother the Minister.
