Vol. 130 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Tipperary Slate Quarries.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will take steps to have a survey made of the slate quarries at Ahenney, Carrick-on-Suir, County Tipperary, with a view to having them reopened.

The quarries referred to by the Deputy have already been so fully surveyed by officers of the Geological Survey that I do not consider that a further survey would add to the available information concerning them. The reopening of the quarries is a matter for private enterprise. The information gained in the various surveys will be made available at the Geological Survey Office to any interested parties.

Why is it that people who want Irish slates cannot get them although we have so many slate quarries in the country?

I have not heard that complaint.

Is the Minister aware that the Dutch will take any quantity of slates we can send to them?
