Vol. 130 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Reduction of Bus Services.

Mr. Byrne

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that a number of buses have been removed from the various routes in Dublin due to electrical defects; and, if so, he will take steps to ensure that the present inadequate services will not continue or be further reduced in this way.

The responsibility for making provision to meet the demand for transport services has been placed by the Transport Act, 1950, on the board of Córas Iompair Éireann. This matter is, accordingly, one which should be taken up direct with Córas Iompair Éireann.

Mr. Byrne

This matter has been taken up with Córas Iompair Éireann and only last week 11 buses were withdrawn from the services in the City of Dublin. There are 30 new buses awaiting attention from electricians. Would not the Minister or his Department move quickly and try to put an end to the present unfortunate trouble which is putting buses into garages?

That is a separate question.

Mr. Byrne

It is not. In my question I am drawing the Minister's attention to the fact that buses are going out of service. The tourist season is commencing and buses have been withdrawn from various routes in Dublin. The number of buses is totally inadequate at the present time and I would ask the Minister to take an interest in the matter.
