Vol. 130 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sale of Subsidised Bread.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that unlimited quantities of subsidised bread are being sold in Monaghan without coupons with results adverse to the local trade generally and, further, if he is aware that bakers in the county resent this unfair competition by Dublin firms; and, if so, if he will take whatever steps are necessary to protect the interests of such country bakers by stringent enforcement of the rationing regulations.

I am not aware that unlimited quantities of bread are being sold without coupons in the Monaghan area. I have been told that bread baked in Dublin is being sold in Monaghan but I have no evidence that it is being sold illegally there. Complaints made to me about the illegal sale of bread in the area are being investigated, and if the Deputy has any evidence that would assist the investigation officers I would ask him to send it to me.
