Vol. 130 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Imports of Animal Feeding Stuffs.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he will have steps taken to prohibit the import of all foreign animal feeding stuffs for which genuine substitutes can be home-produced.

Mr. Walsh

The importation of animal feeding stuffs is already controlled and import licences are at present being granted only to the extent necessary to supplement home production. The more feeding stuffs produced at home and the less need consequently for imports, the better will the country's interests be served.

Does the Minister not think that just now would be a good time to indicate to the farming community that it was his intention during the coming season not to allow the import of animal feeding stuffs except those which we cannot produce at home, and that he will fix a quota for the coming season?

Mr. Walsh

I always encourage our farmers to produce more.
