asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the circumstances in which an allocation of dollars was made within the last six months to cover the importation of second-hand American periodicals and children's picture papers in view of the fact that these may be detrimental to both health and morals here.
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Second-Hand American Periodicals.
From 1949 onwards dollars have been freely allocated to traders for the importation of American books and periodicals and importers have been free to buy new or second-hand publications. I am at present reviewing that policy. As regards the last part of the Deputy's question, considerations as to the effect of imported publications on health and morals are outside the functions of my Department and belong to other Departments which have powers to safeguard the public in that respect.
