Vol. 131 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment of Juveniles on Brosna Drainage.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the number of juveniles at present employed on the Brosna drainage scheme, whether any and, if so, how many are doing work normally done by adult labourers and the average or basic rates of wages now being paid to these boys.

14 juveniles between the ages of 17 and 18 years are at present employed on the Brosna drainage scheme. They are employed mainly on light work, such as going on messages and lighting fires. When not so employed, they are engaged on ordinary labouring work, but they are not expected to give the same output as adult labourers. Their rate of pay is £2 10s. for a 40-hour week.
