Vol. 131 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tobacco, Beer and Spirits Statistics.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the volume of consumption (a) during the year 1951-52, and (b) estimated on the basis of the Budget for the current year, of (1) tobacco, (2) imported wines, (3) imported spirits, (4) imported beer and stout, (5) home-distilled spirits, and (6) home-brewed beer and stout.

Particulars of consumption of the commodities mentioned are not available. The net duty-paid quantities retained for home use may, however, be taken as an approximate guide to consumption although the pattern may be disturbed by any substantial accumulation or depletion of duty-paid stocks in a particular year.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to circulate with the Official Report a tabular statement showing for the commodities concerned (a) the approximate net duty-paid quantities retained for home use in 1951-52, final figures not yet being available, and (b) the corresponding estimated figures for 1952-53.
