Vol. 131 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rural Electrification.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state when the rural electrification scheme will commence in the Rathmore area, County Kerry.

I am informed by the Electricity Supply Board that the Rathmore area, County Kerry, has been selected for development under the rural electrification scheme and that construction work will be commenced towards the end of the present month.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will request the Electricity Supply Board to extend the rural electrification scheme to Cloghane in view of the fact that the scheme can be continued from Castlegregory, a distance of only about five miles, at a reasonable cost.

I am informed by the Electricity Supply Board that a canvass of the residents of the Cloghane neighbourhood is at present being carried out with a view to determining if supply could economically be extended from the Castlegregory area. Pending examination of the results of the canvass it is not possible to say whether development of the neighbourhood will be undertaken.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will ascertain the position as regards Boherbue, County Cork, with reference to the long-established claims of the residents for inclusion in the rural electrification scheme, and further, if extension of the amenity to this area may be expected in the current year.

I am informed by the Electricity Supply Board that the Boherbue area has been considered for selection on a number of occasions. It was last considered on the 22nd April, 1952. The financial return shown by the area does not compare favourably with that of other areas in the district.

The board further inform me that Boherbue will be considered again in the early autumn of this year but it is not possible to indicate at this stage when the area may be selected for development.
