Vol. 131 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Butter Ration.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will indicate what ration of butter was available in each ration period from the 13th February, 1948, to 13th June, 1951.

The ration of butter available in each period was as follows:—

Per head

per week

17th January, 1948—20th August, 1948

6 ozs.

21st August, 1948—29th October, 1948

4 ozs.

30th October, 1948—20th May, 1949

6 ozs.

21st May, 1949—to date

8 ozs.

As the Deputy is aware, of course, we had to import 80,000 cwt. of butter to keep up the ration in 1950-51——

This is off the cuff.

——and in the following year he left us 131,000 cwt. short. The importation of this amount was necessary because of the low production of butter, due to the poor quality of the grass and crops left by Deputy Dillon and to the effective steps which he took to keep the warble flies in the country and also his efforts to reduce the price of milk to 1/- a gallon.

Where did you get all that?
