Vol. 132 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Territorial Fishing Rights.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he has yet considered the effect of the judgment of the International Court of Justice at the Hague concerning the measurement and delimitation of territorial fishing limits; and, if so, what steps the Government propose to take to have the principles of this decision applied to our territorial fishing limits.

Mr. Walsh

The judgment is under consideration and I am not yet in a position to make any statement in regard to the second part of the Deputy's question.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary indicate when he expects to be in a position to make a statement in regard to the whole of this matter?

I cannot answer that question yet.

Does the Parliamentary Secretary not appreciate that it would save me and the members of the House a considerable amount of trouble if he could indicate that we would get the required information if we raised this matter again, say, in a week or a fortnight's time?

I have not sufficient information even to indicate the time within which the question might be repeated.

The Parliamentary Secretary is surely aware that the Iceland Government has had time to consider the matter and reached a decision last March. Surely we should be able to move a little more quickly in the matter.
