Mr. Lynch

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 17, 18 and 19 together. In the case of jams, which are not now controlled by Order, I have arranged with the manufacturers concerned that their prices will be reduced not later than the 5th July next, and that publicity will be given to the matter. At the present stage it is not possible to give details of the reductions as it will be necessary to have regard to other factors affecting costs such as the price to be paid by the manufacturers for this season's fruit. The prices of the other commodities mentioned by the Deputy are not controlled. It is considered that competition in the trade is sufficient to keep prices within reasonable limits. I do not propose at present to intervene in the matter of the price reductions which should result in the case of these commodities. If, however, satisfactory reductions in prices are not introduced within a reasonable period appropriate measures will be taken.

Will the Parliamentary Secretary indicate whether the price of jam and sweets will be brought down to such an extent that people will be able to use jam and sweets instead of bread and butter as their staple diet?

Mr. Lynch

I am sure a lot of people would like to use jam.
