Vol. 132 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment of Women Cleaners.

asked the Minister for Education if he will consider having the employment of women cleaners in the Dublin vocational education schools extended so that they will be employed all the year.

This matter has come up for consideration from time to time, but the City of Dublin Vocational Education Committee has not found it possible to provide employment for the women cleaners for the entire year.

Provision has, however, been made to reduce the period of disemployment to the minimum.

Does the Minister not consider it unfair that these cleaners, not having any stamps to credit, can draw no benefit from any source during the holiday period?

We have been trying to reduce the period of disemployment of these women to the very limit, that is three weeks.

Is it not hard that women who have been working for the whole year should be deprived of benefit during this period?

I quite agree it is hard.

Three weeks is a very small period to have to provide for.

It the Deputy can make a suggestion in regard to the matter I will examine it.

The only suggestion I can make is to give them three weeks' pay.
