Vol. 132 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Civil Service Pensioners.

asked the Minister for Finance whether the 240 Civil Service pensioners to whom he referred in his reply to a question on the 4th June who are in receipt of pensions less than they would have been receiving if the super-cut in the bonus had not been in force at the time when they retired are now the only persons in the country whose incomes continue to be adversely affected by the operation of the super-cut, and whether he will state the approximate amount of the additional expense which would fall on the Exchequer during the current financial year if legislation were enacted on the lines of Section 2 of the Superannuation Act, 1947, to enable these men to receive as from 1st April, 1952, the annual pensions to which they would have been entitled if their remuneration immediately before retirement had not been subject to the operation of the super-cut in bonus.

There may be a few pensioners of local authorities in a similar position to the pensioners referred to by the Deputy but exact information is not readily available. If legislation were enacted to increase from the 1st April, 1952, the pensions of the retired civil servants affected to the amounts which would have been awarded if the super-cut had not been applied, it is estimated that the additional expense which would fall on the Exchequer in the current financial year would be £11,500.
