Vol. 132 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Police Force Applicants.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state the number of applicants for service in the Garda Síochána received from Achill, and in regard to such applicants if he will state (a) the number who complied with the requirements as to height, (b) the number of such applicants who were called to sit for the qualifying educational test, and (c) the reasons which determined the Commissioner in his rejection of those who were not permitted to sit for the qualifying educational test.

Mr. Boland

The total number of applicants was five. Four appeared to comply with the age and minimum physical requirements, but only one was 5 ft. 10 ins. or over. None of the applicants was called for the qualifying educational examination.

I have fully explained in reply to recent questions the reason why all applicants who appeared to comply with the age and minimum physical requirements were not called for the examination.

I wonder would the Minister have this case re-examined? My information is that they were over 5 ft. 10 ins. If that is so, surely the Minister's answer should be reviewed.

Mr. Boland

Only one of the five, according to this.

If I could produce the men and their measurements, would the Minister have the matter re-examined?

Mr. Boland

I would be surprised if that is the case.

Is not Deputy MacBride's real interest that there is a by-election down there?

This matter has been raised on every side of the House.

asked the Minister for Justice whether he is prepared to have circulated to all the applicants for membership of the Garda Síochána who were not called up for interview or invited to take part in the qualifying educational test, a statement setting forth in general terms the reasons for their rejection.

Mr. Boland

The answer is in the negative. The only general statement which could be circulated is that other applicants were considered more suitable.

Would the Minister not consider circulating the statement?

Mr. Boland

I do not see what purpose would be served. The Commissioner makes the selections and I do not see what more you can do about it.

There is a good deal of dissatisfaction about it.

Mr. Boland

I know there is.
