Vol. 133 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sale of Ballina Cottages.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state (a) if he has made any decision with regard to the sale to the tenants of Morrison Terrace cottages, Ballina; (b) what proposals have been submitted by the Ballina Urban Council with regard to this scheme; (c) if he is aware that the urban council have already sold 37 cottages and that 13 of the tenants who purchased have resold, with the approval of the urban council, and (d) if he has approved of the proposal that the purchase price should now be increased on the remaining tenants who want to purchase their houses under the schemes and some of whom are longer in residence than those to whom cottages have already been sold.

(a) and (d): Since my reply to the Deputy on the 27th February, 1952, a letter issued to Ballina Urban District Council to the effect that approval in principle was accorded to the council's general proposals as adopted at their meeting on the 27th November, 1951, and submitted on the 17th December, 1951. The council were asked to submit details of the terms proposed for each scheme in due course. (b) No proposals have so far been submitted for Morrison Terrace or any of the other schemes.

(c): Prior to August, 1951, consent was given to the sale to the occupying tenants in a number of cases (approximately 38). The matter of the observance of the purchase terms (including conditions of resale) is one for the local authority. It is understood that 12 (approximately) of the houses were resold at a profit by the persons who purchased from the council.
