Vol. 133 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Payment of Tomato Growers.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state when tomato growers in the Gaeltacht areas will secure final payment from his Department for the 1951 crop.

Participants in the Gaeltacht glass-house scheme will be paid the final balance due to them very shortly. Payments already made on account represent more than 90 per cent. of the net earnings of the growers concerned.

Is the Minister aware that these unfortunate people have been deprived of unemployment assistance on account of their alleged income? Does he think it fair that they should have to wait for 12 months before being paid for the crop which they produced in the previous year?

Mr. Walsh

As I have stated, more than 90 per cent. of the earnings of the glass-houses has been paid for already.

Every penny counts so far as they are concerned.
