Vol. 133 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - State Cars.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state for whom State cars ZH 9591 and ZH 2319 were provided during the period from the 11th to the 26th June, 1952, the number of miles travelled by each such car during that period and the cost of petrol, oil and other running expenses incurred by each during such period and the journeys then undertaken.

Mr. Boland

Cars ZD 9591 and ZH 2319 are relief cars. They were provided for the use of the Minister for Lands, the Minister for Justice, the Minister for Defence and the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Social Welfare during the period from the 11th to the 26th June, 1952, when their own cars were being either serviced or repaired. The cars performed journeys in County Mayo, County Westmeath and in Dublin.

The total mileage travelled by each of the cars during the period was: ZD 9591—1,730 miles; ZH 2319—1,278 miles. Cost of petrol, oil and running expenses: ZD 9591—£28 5s. 10d.; ZH 2319—£18 10s. .

Were those sums included in the election expenses of the candidate?

Mr. Boland

I think the Deputy used some himself in the by-elections.

But he did not treat the State cars in the way those ones were treated. You will hear all about it next week.

What about the provision of a State car for Deputy Costello?

One was also provided for Deputy de Valera.

Order! Question No. 20.
