Vol. 133 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cost of Maintaining Prisoners.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state the weekly cost of maintaining a prisoner in each of the prisons in Dublin, Limerick, Sligo and Portlaoighise.

The cost of feeding a prisoner in Dublin, Limerick, Sligo and Portlaoighise prisons is respectively 9/9, 8/9, 11/2 and 14/8 a week.

If, however, what the Deputy wants to know is the cost of maintaining the prisons, including the pay and allowances of prison officers, the upkeep of buildings, etc., I shall be glad to have this information complied and supplied to him together with particulars of the daily average prison population over a specified period or, if he prefers it, he can put down another question.
