Vol. 134 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Kerry Roads Grant.

asked the Minister for Finance if arrangements have yet been completed for the allocation of a grant for the repair of (1) the Cloghernoosh accommodation road, The Valley, Beaufort; (2) the accommodation road at Cappanacuss West, E.D. Greenane; (3) the accommodation road Gerah South, E.D. Loughbrin, and (4) the accommodation road at Gortagown and Shrone, E.D. Tahilla; and if he will state the present position with regard to each.

The information given by the Deputy as to the precise location of these four proposals is so limited that I have difficulty in definitely identifying the roads to which he refers.

With regard to No. (1) I can trace no previous representations from the Deputy concerning this proposal which I assume is an accommodation road in the townland of Cloghernoosh "leading from the county road near John Casey's cottage west to the road junction south of John P. Donoghue's house." The unemployment position in the electoral division of Churchtown in which the above mentioned road is situated does not warrant a full-cost grant under minor employment schemes, but if the beneficiaries submit the proposal under the rural improvements scheme the matter will receive due consideration.

I assume that proposal No. (2) refers to a road in the townlands of Cappanacuss West and Capparoe in the electoral division of Dromore, described as an accommodation road "commencing at the county road at Capparoe and continuing east to Patrick Palmer's house." An offer under the rural improvements scheme of a grant has now been made to the applicants through their representative, Mr. David Doran, towards the cost of repairing the road in question.

No. (3) presumably refers to an accommodation and bog road in the townland of Gerah South "leading west off the county road 30 perches south of the national school and continuing to the Killarney-Sneem county road 80 perches east of Gerah Bridge, with branch road leading south at Jeremiah Gallivan's house to Mary Mahony's house." The applicants have not yet replied to an offer of a grant under the rural improvements scheme towards the cost of this work, which was issued to their representative, Mr. Philip Coffey, on the 5th August, 1952.

With regard to No. (4) a number of applications have been received in respect of road works in the townland of Gortagown, and if the Deputy will furnish more precise particulars of the location of the road to which he refers, giving the names of some of the beneficiaries, I shall inform him of the position. I may add, however, that road proposals in the electoral division of Tahilla can be considered only under the rural improvements scheme, to which beneficiaries are required to make a contribution.
