Vol. 134 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Application for U.N.O. Membership.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if the question of the admission of Ireland to the United Nations was recently considered by that organisation and, if so, with what result; and if he will state when the last application for admission to the United Nations was made on behalf of Ireland.

Ireland's application for membership of the United Nations Organisation was under consideration by the Security Council last month. There was no positive result. The Council rejected a proposal that it should recommend the simultaneous admission of a number of applicant States, including Ireland.

With regard to the second part of the question, I would remind the Deputy that, in reply to a parliamentary question on 30th January last, I informed him that Ireland's application for membership of the United Nations Organisation was made in 1946 with the unanimous approval of Dáil Éireann and that there was no question of re-applying for membership.
