Vol. 134 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Offaly New Power Station.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce when the contract will be placed for the construction of a new power station at Lumcloon, Cloghan, County Offaly, and when the work will commence in order to provide local employment.

I am informed by the Electricity Supply Board that it is anticipated that the contract for the erection of the power station at Lumcloon, Offaly, will be placed in the summer of 1953 and that work on the site will commence in the autumn of that year.

In view of the fact that Boora bog has closed down and that in the town of Ferbane, the village of Cloghan and the town of Banagher there are large numbers of unemployed, is it not true to say that if the power station was advertised and work on it commenced sooner there would be a prospect of employment for the unemployed in these areas?

I am sure the Electricity Supply Board will get on with the work as quickly as possible.
