Vol. 134 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Kerry Creameries.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state whether he is aware of the demand for the services of a portable creamery at Cromane, Glencutane and Caragh Lake, County Kerry, and the intentions of the Dairy Disposal Company in the matter.

Mr. Walsh

Representations have been made to my Department from time to time with a view to the provision of a travelling creamery to serve the areas in question. I am informed by the Dairy Disposal Company, however, that the quantity of milk available in these areas is not sufficient to justify the provision of a travelling creamery and that, accordingly, unless the supply position alters, the company could not agree to provide such a vehicle. I understand, however, that the company, with a view to facilitating the farmers in the Cromane area offered to provide a float for the cartage of the milk supplies from that area, but that the farmers concerned rejected the offer.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state whether he is aware of the necessity for the erection of a creamery at Kilgobinet, Beaufort, County Kerry and the intentions of the Dairy Disposal Company in the matter.

Mr. Walsh

As there has been no change in the circumstances, there is nothing I can usefully add to my reply to the similar question asked by the Deputy on 8th November, 1951.

Mr. Flynn

Would the Minister ask the Dairy Disposal Company to have another survey carried through in respect of the proposed creamery at Kilgobinet, Beaufort, especially in view of the fact that there has been an increase in production within the present year?

Mr. Walsh

Yes, there has been an increase in the milk supplies in the area which would seem to justify what the Deputy asks. We shall examine it.
