Vol. 134 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment of Irish Nationals.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether it is correct that the Electricity Supply Board have given a contract to a foreign firm for work that appears to be one of steel fabrication and welding on which 11 non-nationals and only four Irish nationals are employed; and, if so, if he will make representations to have Irish nationals employed who are capable of doing this work.

I am aware that a foreign firm holds a contract from the Electricity Supply Board for the erection of fuel oil storage tanks. Before this contract was placed, the board was informed by the Irish Structural Steel and Ironworkers' Association that the type of work in the specification was not of interest to its members. The foreign firm, with which the contract was placed ultimately, claimed that the guarantees required by the board could not be given, unless it had authority to employ some of its own welders on the work.

Ten foreign and six Irish workers are at present employed, and I am informed by the Electricity Supply Board that discussions are proceeding between the board and the trade union concerned about the possibility of engaging additional Irish workers.

Is the Minister aware that it is understood that an additional 12 non-nationals will be employed within the next month?

I have no information about that. I assume that the trade union concerned will make any representations necessary to the Electricity Supply Board in the matter.
