Vol. 134 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Waterford Midwives' Expenses.

asked the Minister for Health whether he has received from the Waterford Board of Public Assistance a proposal for sanction to pay to midwives in the employment of the board a sum of £60 bonus in lieu of travelling expenses so that they may be able to run a car or pay for car hire to attend cases throughout their districts; and, if so, whether he is prepared to sanction the proposal.

I have received from the Waterford Board of Public Assistance a proposal to allow up to £50 in lieu of travelling expenses to each midwife employed by the board. The general question of the conditions of employment of midwives in the local authority service will require to be considered in conjunction with the proposals outlined in the recent White Paper on health services and it will take some time before I can arrive at a decision in the matter.

Does the Minister intend to sanction a lump sum?

I think it is the intention of the Minister to sanction a lump sum.
