Vol. 134 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Donegal Telephone Service.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware of the urgent necessity for a direct telephone service between Ardara and Killybegs, County Donegal, thus connecting west with south-west and south Donegal; and, if so, if he will have such service made available.

The cost of providing a direct telephone line between Ardara and Killybegs would not be justified by the small number of calls that would be carried on such a circuit. The most economical way of improving the service in these areas is by providing additional circuits on the existing routes. The additional circuits which are necessary will be provided as soon as circumstances permit.

Is the Minister aware that a considerable amount of public funds has been expended in the town of Killybegs in the erection of a pier, a sanatorium, fishmeal plant, etcetera, and that the neighbouring town, Ardara, has no direct telephone communication with Killybegs, that one has to go a complete circuit, whereas the erection of seven miles of telephone wires would connect the two towns?

Mr. Boland

They tell me ten miles and that very few people would be concerned, whereas, if they do what it has been decided to do, improve the other circuits, it will be a more satisfactory, as well as a more economical way. That is the decision after a full survey of the position. That is all I can tell the Deputy.
