Vol. 134 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Córas Iompair Éireann Electricians' Strike.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if, in view of (a) the growing unemployment resulting from the strike of electricians employed by Córas Iompair Éireann; (b) the danger to road-users as a result of buses being fitted inadequately with lights and traffic indicators due to the strike, and (c) the hardship resulting to the men involved in this strike, he will take direct action to endeavour to secure a speedy settlement of the strike.

I have no statutory powers which would enable me to take action to effect a settlement of this dispute, otherwise than by agreement between the parties concerned.

Has the Minister any information about the recent discussions which were proceeding with a view to a settlement of the strike?

I have, yes.

Can the Minister say whether the discussions are likely to result in anything?

That would be prophesying.

The Minister is very good at prophesying.
