Vol. 134 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Repair of Roads.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will include in the list of tourist roads for repair the following roads in County Sligo: (a) the road leading from Sligo to Strandhill via Carrowmore, (b) the road leading from Ballidochid to Strandhill, and (c) the road leading from Sligo to Strandhill on the south side of Knocknarea.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware of the necessity for the allocation of special road grants for the repair of roads in Valentia Island; and, if so, if he will arrange for the carrying through of a special scheme for Valentia Island under the recently announced programme for the construction and repair of roads in Gaeltacht and congested districts.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 42 and 43 together.

I informed a number of Deputies last week, who asked similar questions, that it would be premature to indicate at this stage the particular works which will be carried out under the scheme for the improvement of tourist roads in the Gaeltacht and congested areas. I may add that I have now decided to leave to the local authorities and their advisers the initiative in the selection of works appropriate to this programme and that the county councils concerned will shortly be notified of the conditions and limits of expenditure subject to which they may submit proposals.
