Vol. 135 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Housing.

Mr. O'Higgins

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware that an acute housing problem exists in Clonaslee, Laoighis; and if he will state what housing plans the Laoighis County Council has for the area.

I understand that five new cottages are required in Clonaslee, and that a scheme to provide them is being prepared.

Mr. O'Higgins

Did the Minister say five, not 50?

Mr. O'Higgins

Is the Minister aware that there are some 30 applicants who are in acute need of houses in that area at the moment?

I can only go by the information supplied by the local authority. The scheme has not reached the stage when it could be submitted to me, but my reply is based on the information submitted to me by the local authority.

Mr. O'Higgins

If I give the Minister particulars?

I suggest that the particulars should be given to the local authority. It is the local authority and not the Department that initiates the schemes and determines the size of the schemes and the number of people to be catered for.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether proposals have been received in his Department from the local authority for the erection of houses at Rhode, County Offaly; and, if so, if he will state the reason for the delay in sanctioning the proposals in view of the strong local demand for houses.

The Offaly County Council's proposal to accept a tender for the erection of ten houses at Rhode, Offaly, was received on 22nd October and approved on the 6th November.

Is the Minister aware that ten houses will not provide accommodation for almost 40 people in Rhode who require it?

There is no mention of the accommodation that is required or of the people in need of houses. The Deputy has tabled a question and I have given him the information which he sought. Even though it is not covered in his question, I can only say, as I said in reply to the previous question, that that is a matter entirely for decision by the local authority concerned.
