Vol. 135 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Haulage Licences.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if, to remove doubts felt by persons in the haulage trade, he will, if necessary, by the introduction of proposals for legislation, have the provisions concerning the issue of licences for haulage purposes brought into line with the road taxation proposals recently made by the Minister for Local Government as regards the weight categories specified in each case.

The standard lorry weight specified in a merchandise licence granted under the Road Transport Act, 1933, is related to the weight of the vehicle or vehicles with which the haulage business was operated prior to the introduction of the licensing requirements.

The road tax proposals made by the Minister for Local Government do not have the effect of increasing the weight of hauliers' vehicles, and I do not consider that these proposals call for any amendment of the statutory provisions governing the grant of road merchandise licences.
