Vol. 135 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Gammon Exports.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state how he reconciles his statement in reply to a question on 20th November that, as regards bacon, a small quantity of gammons only has been exported at a standard price of 328/- per cwt. f.o.b. with the table furnished by the Department of the Taoiseach showing that 55 cwt. of bacon value £1,306; 362 cwt. of hams value £8,332, plus 8,303 cwt. of tinned ham value £327,827, were exported to Britain during the last six months.

Mr. Walsh

My reply to the Deputy's question on 20th November related to exports to the British Ministry of Food during the six months ended 20th November. There were no exports of bacon or gammons to the Ministry this year before 8th November.

The figures furnished by the Taoiseach's Department related to exports during the six months ended 31st October. The exports during this period comprised bacon and hams exported for dollars either on sale to American interests in Britain or sent to residents in Britain as gifts on the order of American donors; and traderto-trader exports of canned ham which have since 1950 been free of import and distribution control in Britain and which, until recently, were free of price control.
