Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Land Commission Lands and Turbary.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state what progress has been made by the Land Commission towards the acquisition of Mr. John McNaughten's lands (approximately 400 acres) on Thomastown demesne, County Roscommon.

Proceedings for the acquisition of this estate are well advanced.

Can the Minister give any indication as to when a final decision will be reached in the matter?

I cannot say. There is an appeal to be heard and there is a Land Bill to be introduced. My information is that the appeal will not be heard before the passing of the Bill.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state whether the Land Commissioners are prepared to negotiate with the Department of Defence for the acquisition of a large area of bog held by the Minister for Defence in the Kiltoom district, Athlone, and formerly used as a rifle range, for the purpose of carrying out drainage and development works witha view to allocating turbary rights to local deserving applicants.

I understand that these lands are State property and cannot be sold pending the passage of enabling legislation. The introduction of such legislation is not a matter for my Department.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state what progress has been made by the Land Commission towards the acquisition of the O'Flaherty—Johnston estate, Kilmurvy, Inishmore.
