Vol. 136 No. 8

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cork Unemployment.

asked the Minister for Finance if, in view of the present serious unemployment situation in the Kilcashin electoral division of Bantry, he will put special relief schemes into effect there immediately.

The moneys available in the Employment and Emergency Schemes Vote are primarily intended to provide a spell of employment during the winter months to men in receipt of unemployment assistance.

The proportionate share of the amount available has already been allocated to the electoral division of Kilcashin and I have no further funds at my disposal from which additional grants could be sanctioned.

In view of the particular nature of the unemployment situation in the electoral division, can the Parliamentary Secretary make any representations to the Government, in the light of the Taoiseach's stated anxiety to relieve this immediate problem, to get an added allocation of money for special relief efforts?

The latest census figures have not come to hand and I have no information to show that the position has got worse.

The situation is very serious, I can tell the Parliamentary Secretary.

asked the Minister for Finance if, in view of the unemployment position in Adrigole, he will take steps to alleviate this position by sanctioning suitable employment schemes.

The moneys available in the Employment and Emergency Schemes Vote are primarily intended to provide a spell of employment during the winter months to men in receipt of unemployment assistance.

The proportionate share of the amount available has already been allocated to the electoral division of Adrigole, and I have no further funds at my disposal from which additional grants could be sanctioned.

In view of the particular nature and location of this electoral division and in view of the fact that the Parliamentary Secretary's colleague, the Minister for Local Government, is making special moneys available for tourist road development, would the Parliamentary Secretary be able to do something in conjunction with the Department of Local Government to get schemes already approved for this particular area expedited so that people could be put to work now rather than some months later?

The amount sanctioned for this area during the current year has been somewhat greater than in either of the two preceding years.

I am aware of all that but the position is that through thegood offices of the Department of Local Government, about £17,000 is being made available in the western area of Cork for tourist road development and I am urging the Parliamentary Secretary to get some co-ordination between his office and the Department of Local Government so that people would be put into employment now rather than that they should leave the country and not be available here at a time when they might be needed for employment.
