Vol. 136 No. 8

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Shelters at Employment Exchanges.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will have shelters erected at all employmentexchanges to shelter from the weather the people who have to wait in long queues for attention to their claims.

The provision of shelters at all employment exchanges does not appear to be necessary. As intimated in my reply to Deputy Thomas E. Byrne on the 5th instant, the present pressure on employment exchanges is temporary.

If it should prove at certain employment exchanges that there are many queueing, I take it it would be the Parliamentary Secretary's intention to provide suitable accommodation to protect applicants?

As a matter of fact we are providing shelter in Victoria Street at the moment. The whole question of new offices is under consideration.

Arising out of the Parliamentary Secretary's statement that the position is temporary, can he indicate what definite proposals there are to provide work for these people? Can he state the date on which these people will get work?

That is a separate question.

I think, according to the Parliamentary Secretary, there is no unemployment.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will state the number of persons registered as unemployed at the employment exchanges in Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Waterford on the second Saturday of February, 1951, 1952 and 1953.

As the reply is in the form of a tabular statement I propose to circulate it with the official report.
