Vol. 136 No. 8

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Kilkenny Housing Scheme.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state (1) when the scheme for the erection of houses in Walkin Street, Kilkenny, was first submitted for the sanction of his Department and (2) the date when it was sanctioned or the cause of the delay in doing so; and, further, if he is aware that about 50 men were paid off the Patrick Street scheme in the same city last week; and, if so, if he will now state when the work will begin on the direct labour scheme in Walkin Street.

Preliminary plans for the proposed housing scheme at WalkinStreet were submitted to my Department on the 25th September, 1952. The plans were discussed by an inspector of my Department with the corporation's architect and certain revisions were agreed to. Amended plans were received in my Department on the 5th December, but on examination it was found that the proposals for the drainage of the site were deficient and that two of the house-plans were unsuitable. The corporation were requested on the 9th instant to forward a plan showing clearly the proposed drainage arrangements and suggestions in regard to two of the house-plans were also made. I am aware that the Patrick Street scheme has been completed, but I cannot indicate when work will be commenced on the Walkin Street scheme until I receive the corporation's revised proposals.
