Vol. 136 No. 8

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Aer Línte Officers' U.S.A. Visit.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if it was with his approval or knowledge that Aer Línte Éireann has sent its general manager and its publicity officer to the U.S.A. in connection with the proposed transatlantic service; and, if so, when such knowledge was acquired or such approval was given by him.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the purpose of the visit of the general manager of Aer Línte Éireann to the U.S.A. and if discussions are still proceeding between Aer Línte and Seaboard and Western Airlines.

I propose to answer Questions Nos. 8 and 9 together.

The Government have considered the proposed arrangements for a transatlantic air service in the light of the findings of the United States Civil Aeronautics Board on the provisional agreement between Aer Línte Éireann and Seaboard and Western Airlines Incorporated and, at my suggestion, the two companies have entered into discussions with a view to exploring the matter further. The arrangements for the visit of the general manager of Aer Línte Éireann to the U.S.A. were made after I had written on the matter to the chairman of the company on the 10th February. My approval for the visit of the general manager was not required.
