Vol. 136 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Road Traffic Act Prosecutions.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state the number of prosecutions instituted under the Road Traffic Act, 1933, for the years 1948, 1949, 1950, 1951 and 1952 and theamounts of the fines which arose therefrom.

Mr. Boland

The figures for the year 1952 are not available. The number of prosecutions in respect of the calendar years, 1948, 1949, 1950 and 1951 were respectively, 100,082, 97,919, 87,218 and 84,989.

The total amounts of the fines imposed are not available and the time and labour which compilation of the figures would involve would scarcely be warranted. The figures for fines paid, however, in respect of road traffic offences for the financial years 1948/49, 1949/50, 1950/51 and 1951/52 were, respectively, £32,412 2s. 10d., £36,372 19s. 8d., £37,857 18s. 1d., and £37,656 2s. 3d.
