Vol. 136 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Mayo Hand-Won Turf.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if, in view of the fact that sites for hand-won turf power stations have already been announced for Donegal, Kerry, Clare and Galway, he will give early consideration to an additional site in a central position to accommodate the residents of bog areas in the barony of Erris, North Mayo, as residents in the areas Belderrig, Pullathomas, Barnatra, Bangor Erris, Geesala and Ballycroy migrate every year, and a hand-won turf scheme would help to give them a rotational method of employment.

As already announced, the E.S.B. propose to erect a generating station in this area which will use milled peat derived from the bogs of Oweninny and Bangor Erris; these bogs are at present being developed by Bord na Móna. In the circumstances, it is not proposed to erect a station in the area to use hand-won turf.

Is it not true that it is not proposed to operate this station on hand-won turf?

Not on hand-won turf but on milled peat.
