Vol. 136 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Closing of Canal Branch.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that the delay of the Transport Tribunal in making a report on the closing of the Herbertstown branch of the Grand Canal is causing the Kildare County Council very considerable embarrassment and difficulty in their plans to improve Limerick Bridge, Naas; and, if so, if he will make a statement in the matter.

Under Section 56 of the Transport Act, 1950, C.I.E. is required to obtain an order from the Transport Tribunal if it proposes to close a canal or part of a canal to navigation. I have no function in regard to the consideration or final outcome of an applicationto the tribunal for such order. I should say, however, that I understand that any delay there has been in the issue of the order is not attributable to the tribunal. I am informed that the order sought by C.I.E. was made yesterday by the tribunal.
