Vol. 136 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Importation of Fertilisers.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state to whom licences to import fertilisers free of duty are available and the appropriate procedure for obtaining such licences where individual farmers desire to secure supplies.

Applications from merchants for licences to import limited quantities of granulated concentrated compound fertilisers free of duty have recently been granted. A licence for the duty-free importation of the raw materials has also beengranted to a manufacturer of such compounds. Applications from farmers, which may be made by letter, will also be considered.

The fertilisers liable to duty on importation are superphosphates, ground mineral phosphates and compound manures of non-British Commonwealth origin.

In view of the fact that the Shamrock Fertiliser Company is now able to produce highgrade fertilisers ad lib,is the Minister considering issuing more import licences to merchants to bring in highgrade fertilisers or is he leaving the situation as it stands at present?

I am stating that a manufacturer of compound fertilisers will be permitted to import the raw materials.
