Vol. 136 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Direct Labour Schemes of Housing.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state the number of houses erected by direct labour for local authorities, urban and rural, in the year ended 31st December, 1952, and the saving effected per house and the location of the schemes in question.

As the reply contains atabular statement I propose, with the permission of the Leas-Cheann Comhairle, to circulate it with the Official Report.

The number of houses erected by direct labour for local authorities during the year ended 31st December, 1952, was 1,734. The houses were in the following locations:—

In the case of practically all of these houses the local authorities concerned, when deciding to use the direct labour method, had not before them specific tenders from contractors and specific estimates from their own direct labour organisations. While it had to be established in advance that the work could be carried out economically and expeditiously by direct labour, the circumstances in which the schemes originated do not make it possible to calculate the saving, if any, per house effected by utilising the direct labour system.
