Vol. 137 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Use of Housing Materials.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state the estimated amount of cement used in the average house prior to the last war and the amount now used.

The approximate quantities of cement used in the erection of houses by local authorities prior to the last war varied from nine tons in a rural cottage to 14 tons in an urban house. An additional two tons per house is being used at present in each case. Approximately 18 tons of cement were used in building an average size private house prior to the war and about 21 tons are used at present.

These estimates relate to houses where concrete is the main building material.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state the estimated amount (in percentages) spent by a contractor on (a) materials and (b) labour in the erection of a house.

It is estimated that the percentages of the cost of erecting a house, attributable to materials and labour respectively, are approximately 60 and 40 in the case of unserviced rural cottages and approximately 50-50 in the case of fully-serviced urban houses.
