Vol. 138 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Payment of Trade Union Wages.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that a building contractor is not paying the agreed trade union wages to the workers employed at the erection of a new school at Leixlip, and that when the employees' trade union applied for payment of the proper wages and back money due, three of the workers were dismissed and that a strike is at present in progress on the job; and, if so, whether he will withhold any grant towards the cost of the project until correct payment of the workers has been effected.

I am informed that the contract for the erection of a national school at Leixlip, County Kildare, is proceeding and that the recognised rates of wages for the district are being paid. I understand that, while some cause for complaint did previously exist, the contractor is rectifying matters by paying such back money as is due. I am also informed that the services of some workers were dispensed with for reasons not connected with rates of wages.
