Vol. 138 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Emigration Statistics.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state the number of emigrants for each year from 1946 to 1951, inclusive.

It is not possible to estimate the number of emigrants (i.e. the gross emigration) from this country, either in individual years or for a number of years, for reasons which I explained fully in my reply to a question by Deputy Hession on May 1, 1952. Furthermore, net emigration (i.e. gross emigration less gross immigration) can be stated accurately only for intercensal periods, the allocation to individual years being subject to wide margins of error. It has, however, beenroughly estimated that the net emigration amounted to 3,000 in 1946, to 10,000 in 1947, to 28,000 in 1948, to 34,000 in 1949, and to 41,000 in 1950. It is not possible to give a corresponding estimate for 1951 for the reasons given in my reply to Deputy Declan Costello on 22 October, 1952.
